IT’S been nearly three decades since Ballarat last had a drive-in cinema, but that’s about to change in just a few days the Showgrounds will soon offer the throwback experience.

Showbiz Cinemas – the operators of the multiplex at Delacombe Town Centre – have teamed up with the Ballarat Agricultural & Pastoral Society and the City of Ballarat to put on the drive-in, which will run each weekend until at least April next year.

“We are absolutely delighted to be able to bring this concept to fruition after such a difficult time for our community in recent months,” said Showbiz Group director Chris Jones.

“We understand this will be one of the first major events in Ballarat since the easing of restrictions and what better way to enjoy a social-outing, watching a movie on the big screen, whilst still being able to maintain physical distancing.”

With the Ballarat Show cancelled and the regular Rotary Markets also on the backburner, the Showgrounds on the corner of Howitt Street and Creswick Road have sat mostly idol since March.

BAPS executive officer Elizabeth van Beek said hosting the drive-in at the space was a great way to utilise the facility and could lead to bigger things.

“We are thrilled to partner with a local cinema company to bring something positive, fun and entertaining to the community,” she said.

“There has been recent community discussion about possible uses for the existing Showgrounds as we plan to relocate to… Mount Rowan. A drive-in cinema is just one of the many possible uses for the longer-term future.”

The first screening will run from 13 November and moviegoers will be able to tune into the film’s audio on their car’s stereo system.

There’ll also be a full candy bar on offer with all the favourites – from popcorn to choc tops and hot food. All sales, including tickets will be online and vehicle numbers capped.
