MEREDITH History Interest Group hosted a sculpture exhibition at the town’s History Centre last weekend.

A prize-giving for entrants was held on Sunday 4 May at 2pm, with Darren Guthrie winning the overall first prize and the People’s Choice for his work, Grandad’s old tractor.

MHIG’s Marg Cooper said the group is always looking for new ways to bring history to the public.

“We collect a lot of history, but we also like to do things to get historic information out there,” she said.

“We’ve got a lovely building – the old shire hall which was built in 1878 – and a lovely yard to go with it.

the guest judge was Mark Cuthbertson, artist of Aunty Meredith’s Lounge in the centre of the town.

“In the time we’ve been there, we’ve improved the yard… and the idea was to bring the sculptures to the garden, but we also had a lot of inside sculptures. It looked fantastic.

“We ended up with 99 entries, which was better than we ever dreamed of. Twenty of those were children.”

Overall second prize winner was Ms Cooper with Relics of my childhood and an honourable mention went to Jake McDonnell for Digging the Land.

Junior first and second prizes went to Luca and Hamish respectively, for Aussie Snag and Ned Kelly.

“The judge, Inverleigh’s Mark Cuthbertson, was so taken with Ned Kelly, he bought it,” Ms Cooper said.

“We hope people enjoyed having the opportunity to make things.”

The event was part of the Australian Heritage Festival.
