Seat to honour Dulcie
MEMORIAL seating aimed at celebrating and remembering a longtime contributor to Rokewood is set to be unveiled next week.
The installation commemorates Dulcie Long, a former staff member of Hesse Rural Health and Leigh Community Care Centre, who passed away in 2016.
The initiative has been undertaken by the Golden Plains Rural Women’s Network, whose president Hannah Stevenson said it’s about highlighting Ms Long’s contributions for her community.
“It’s bringing to attention the massive efforts she went to for the community,” she said.
“Dulcie was one of the first in Australia to provide a program for children on farm safety in schools which is something that’s still running through the schools and the health programs.
“She was also a big part of getting Hesse Rural Health up and running as well as the men’s shed in our area and Cressy’s.”
The memorial seating will be located along Kuruc A Ruc Creek at Ford Road and has been funded with more than $9000 in grant funding from WestWind Energy.
The fixture will include signage highlighting Ms Long’s achievements.
Ms Stevenson said the seating isn’t the only way the group plans to commemorate Ms Long.
“This will be part of the walking track we’re aiming to have named after her as well once that’s up and running,” she said.
“There’s a bit of a loop around Rokewood which goes from the lagoon, up past the primary school, down Ford Road and then there’s the main track which runs out to Colac Road along to the pub and shop then back out to the lagoon.
“We’re hoping the naming will be completed by the end of the year.”
The memorial will be unveiled at 2.30pm of Friday 21 June after which refreshments will be had at Hesse Rural Health.
Attendees are invited to bring photos or items of memorabilia to add to a memorial board on the day for display.
