YOUNG people can be entertained by music and movies these school holidays at the Golden Plains Youth Hub.

Twelve to 25-year-olds are invited to take part in a workshop with local music producer Will Conte to learn the basics of DJing and mixing on Thursday 7 July, from 2pm to 4pm.

Golden Plains Shire mayor Cr Gavin Gamble said the session is designed to a fun, inclusive, and different way to engage with the arts.

“The DJ workshop will give young people the opportunity to try their hand on the DJ decks, explore different genres of music and express themselves in a new, creative way,” he said.

“This is a new addition to council’s youth programs and will be a great way for young people to connect, build confidence and learn something new.

“These activities are delivered in a safe, supportive, and fun environment and are a fantastic way to keep busy during the holiday period.”

Twelve to 18 year olds are also welcome to drop into the Youth Hub the next day for the FReeZA movie night.

Running from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, 8 July the event run by the new FReeZA Youth Event Crew will be alcohol, drug and smoke-free with a movie screened, and pizza, popcorn, and drinks available.

“Movie night at the Hub is a great opportunity for Golden Plains youth to come together in a safe and inclusive space and celebrate the end of school holidays,” Cr Gamble said.

“As a youth-led event, movie night at the Hub is more than just a fun night out for young people in the Shire, it also provides members of the FReeZA Youth Events Crew with important development opportunities within the arts and events industries.”

The Shire’s school holiday program also includes art workshops on Monday, 4 July from 11am to 1pm, a NAIDOC Week film screening on Tuesday, 5 July from 3pm to 5pm, and a music and Nintendo drop-in session on Wednesday, 6 July from 2pm to 5pm.
