BMX demonstrations, tai chi and pony displays were all part of an exhibition in Smythesdale at the weekend celebrating the diversity of pastimes available to residents.
The Golden Plains Sport and Rec Fest presented a range of sports, clubs, and interest groups at Woady Yaloak Recreation Reserve on Saturday 21 February.
Brilliant weather contributed to a lively atmosphere of clubs promoting their passions and residents exploring the many activities the region had to offer.
Organiser Golden Plains Shire Council was pleased with the event’s success.
“The event created strong and meaningful connections between local residents, sporting clubs, and community groups,” a council spokesperson said.
“It provided a rare opportunity for clubs to promote themselves, share what they offer, and engage directly with people of all ages.
“Most importantly, it showcased the breadth of recreation and wellbeing options available across Golden Plains.”
The event included traditional team sports, individual activities, recreation groups, wellbeing services, and hobby-based organisations.
More than 35 children took part in engaging skate and BMX demonstrations.

Tennis, golf and bowls also featured at the event, as well as pony displays.
Inside the reserve’s indoor facility, there was pickleball, soft tennis, GenkiFit sessions, tai chi and handcraft.
“Across the venue, residents chatted with clubs, tried hands at activities, and learned about programs that support health, fitness, social connection, and community participation,” the spokesperson said.
“The aim of the Rec Fest was to shine a spotlight on the diverse range of sport, recreation, and wellbeing opportunities available within the shire, while building stronger relationships between community members, clubs, volunteers, and council.
“This was achieved throughout the day as organisations were able to connect with new participants, families had the chance to explore clubs they hadn’t known about, and residents were able to learn more about programs that support active, healthy lifestyles.”
The next Rec Fest will be held in Bannockburn’s Recreation Precinct Soccer Pavilion on Saturday 14 March. More information at goldenplains.vic.gov.au.
