AN icy winter in the Shire’s north is not just something to brave this year, it’s something to celebrate.

In an effort to keep warm, Smythesdale Country Market is running a Battle of the Beanies competition, encouraging crafters to get out their needles and hooks, and create a colourful, creative practical cosy and woolly hat.

Entries will be displayed and judged by members of the Scarsdale CWA at the market on Saturday, 18 June, and then donated to Uniting Ballarat to support their provision of emergency relief.

“We wanted to celebrate winter and do something that involves multiple aspects of the community,” said market spokesperson Jaymee Ellis.

“We’ll have a stall set up specifically for the entries, put numbers on them, and towards the end of the market after 1pm, our judges will announce their decision. The CWA will consider creativity, not how perfect it is.

“If an entrant is a first-time beanie maker, they’ll consider that effort. Anyone with a ball of wool is welcome to have a crack and get into the spirit of community and charity.”

Beanie-makers can drop their entry off at the Market on the day or take it to In & Out Custom Blind Solutions ahead of the weekend and leave their details.

The Battle of the Beanies winner will receive a $100 voucher.

The market organisers are also encouraging people to donate good quality warm clothes and blankets to Uniting Ballarat. For more information, contact [email protected].
