FOR those seeking a warming winter activity, Linton and District Bowling Club offers an inclusive and social Sunday sporting option.

Their Sunday Scroungers social lawn bowls competition runs from 1pm to 3pm, with afternoon tea and play-offs between the winners of each rink.

About 20 to 35 people usually attend, and players of all abilities are welcome, from beginners to bowls experts.

“It’s an easy game, all-inclusive of men and women, and players with mobility issues can use aids like an arm or chair to participate in the rinks,” member and admin volunteer Adrian Graham said.

“There’s a bit of banter. Bowls is great for brains, and for mental health.

“You can focus on something different, take your mind off things, have a coffee, some cake and a social chat.

“It’s a great alternative to get off the farm or out of the house.”

Men and women of all abilities are invited to have a go at the competition over winter weekends and meet new people.

President Eugene Griggs said if top division bowlers keep coming back, they’re given a handicap to even out the competition.

If the weather is too wet, the club offers indoor carpet bowls but Mr Griggs said it’s rare they don’t play outdoors.

Cost is $10 entry which includes afternoon tea. The Sunday events run until September.

Linton plays in divisions one, four and eight in the Ballarat Highlands Bowls competition.

The club has an average of 60 members, and is currently sitting at 55.

“The ‘district’ in Linton and District Bowling Club is important. Most of our members are from surrounding areas,” Mr Griggs said.
