THE third Sonika Records compilation album is now in production, set to give fifteen of Ballarat’s young musical acts a platform.

Eleda Grace, s.k.a.l.a, Fie Briar, Mia Rose, Volt Jolt, Loving Elara, Jack A.M., Mest One, ELLI OTþ, Adele Lockhart, Sinkhole City, Charlotte, Esoteric, Dunn, and Peryton will all feature on the album, having recorded one song at Studio 52 in Heidelberg West.

City of Ballarat youth development officer Maddison Hudson Stepnell said the 15 tracks are contrasting.

“We have rappers, rock bands, pop artists, acoustic indie music, electro pop, and pop-punk-rock music; very diverse,” she said.

Sofie Brouwers-Morrison works with a sound engineer to perfect a track.

“A lot of them have never been in a professional studio or recorded their music before, so this was such an experience for them.

“Some of them were nervous, but once they recorded and heard their song, they couldn’t believe they were able to do it. It’s amazing for them.”

Hard rock band Loving Elara has been part of the recording experience. Vocalist Shon Dunn said his ensemble “loved being in the studio.”

“Having a full set-up studio experience was a big change to just recording at home. The recording engineers at Studio 52 are fantastic to work with,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter what the genre of music is, they’re passionate about trying to bring the best out of each performer and artist. It was great to have someone there pushing you in right direction.

“In the down time, there was a great sense of camaraderie hanging out with the other musicians who come from different backgrounds, are different ages, and offer different styles.”

Physical CDs and downloads will be available early next year when the record launches. Sonika is facilitated by FReeZA and Ballarat Youth Services. Visit facebook.com/freezasonika.
