Speed shear returns to Winchelsea
WINCHELSEA Football Netball Club is set to revive a much-loved local tradition this weekend, bringing speed shearing back to Hopkins Street as part of its round one celebrations.
The community-focused event will follow the club’s senior football clash against Werribee Centrals at Eastern Reserve, with the on-field action kicking off at 1pm before the shearing spectacle begins at 6pm.
Drawing inspiration from the popular Moriac Hotel competitions of years past, the revived event promises a lively mix of sport, entertainment and grassroots fundraising, with organisers hoping to attract families, locals and visitors alike.

Club president Angus Leigh said the return of speed shearing had already generated strong interest across the region.
“We haven’t done anything like this in the fundraising vein for a long time, but we are really looking forward to it,” he said.
“We’ll have the speed shearers going, raffles, the barbecue, bar and a big family-friendly atmosphere to thrive off.”
The event will feature open and intermediate shearing categories, alongside a light-hearted relay competition where teams of three will eat a pie, drink a beer and shear a sheep in a race against the clock. A box of Carlton Draught awaits the winning team, while additional prize money is also up for grabs.
Spectators can attend for free, with singlets available on the day and raffle tickets contributing to club fundraising efforts.
Leigh said the event was about more than just entertainment, highlighting its role in strengthening community connections.
“Hopefully it’ll be a great success and we can push it further in the future.”
On the field, the club is also entering the 2026 season with renewed confidence following a strong off-season.
“We are so excited from a club perspective,” Leigh said.
“We’ve had the best off-season in a long time and there’s a real buzz around the place.”
With footy, food and fast shears all on offer, the club is encouraging the community to turn out and support a uniquely local night.
