Supporting Golden Plains Shire’s sporty women
VICHEALTH has injected fifteen-thousand dollars into women’s sport in the Golden Plains Shire through their This Girl Can campaign.
An initiative that supports and champions female sportspeople and encourages those less active to foster a positive relationship with sport, the State government is helping council provide community grants of up to $300.
Created to assist groups in promoting their local, free or affordable women’s physical activities throughout This Girl Can Week in March, people can apply for the grants until Friday, 7 February.
VicHealth social marketing manager, Mel Fineberg said it’s important for women to have the chance to try new sports or activities without judgement or previously established skills.
“We want all women, no matter how sweaty they get, how red their face is or how good they are, to feel comfortable about getting out there and giving physical activity a go,” she said.
“The aim of This Girl Can Week is to provide women with a whole range of activities which are inclusive, non-judgemental and accessible for women of different ages, body shapes and abilities.
“This Girl Can Week is for all kinds of Victorian women who are all kinds of active. I encourage local women to give something a go. You might discover a new favourite hobby.”

Golden Plains Shire Council has linked up with G21 women and Girls Physical Activity Working Group to market the week, utilising images of active communities in the area and coordinating a celebration event at GMHBA stadium.
Amongst others, the women of the Shire’s Youth Council, and YMCA Bannockburn will be facilitating activities for young girls and women during the week.
