THE Golden Plains Civic Centre’s council chambers hold pieces of the past that can throw the community back in time.

The building’s inaugural Your Story, Our Story exhibition, championing community history and the Shire’s township yarns of old, can be seen through social media project #ThrowbackThursday: Our Story.

Golden Plains Shire mayor Cr Helena Kirby encourages residents to engage with the campaign online and find out more about where they live.

“Golden Plains Shire has 56 townships, from large towns to small rural communities, each with their own rich history,” she said.

“The Your Story, Our Story exhibition brought together special objects from these townships right across the Shire, and now it’s exciting to see these objects and their incredible stories shared publicly.

“This special social media campaign is a unique, great opportunity for residents to learn more about the Shire’s history and to celebrate the stories of their communities, with a new community and object showcased every week.”

The display is being shared online while the Civic Centre is still closed to the public due to the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Featured ephemera and photography tell valuable and special community stories. The pieces were nominated by Golden Plains residents during a consultation process last year.

Each Thursday, pieces are shared as part of #ThrowbackThursday: Our Story on the Golden Plains Shire’s Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

The campaign began this month, and will showcase an object or photo, and the location they’re from, each week for six months.
