WHILE the work may have been completed some months ago, dignitaries from Federal and local politics turned out to Victoria Park Recreation Reserve on Sunday to officially switch on new lights at Bannockburn Football Netball Club.

Funded through the Federal Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Grant Program to the tune of $500,000, the ceremony took place during half-time in the Anzac Day seniors clash between the Tigers and North Geelong.

“Local sporting clubs are the lifeblood of our growing community and now our local athletes, coaches and volunteers can enjoy longer hours of winter sport and training with these brand-new high-quality lights in place,” said Victorian Senator Sarah Henderson.

The two ovals at Vic Park now have eight towers in total, throwing enough light to hold night games at the site, as well as longer training sessions for the Tigers two senior and eight junior sides.

Golden Plains Shire mayor Cr Helena Kirby was thankful for the Federal funding for the project.

“Local football players are enjoying team training on both ovals and there was great excitement this month when they played their first competition night match under the new lights,” she said.

“With the new lights switched on, there is more opportunity for local walkers and runners to also enjoy active recreation in the evening.”

In on-field action, Bannockburn crushed North Geelong 13.12 (90) to 5.11 (41).
