LOCAL artists Rosie Grundell and Kate Wise are holding a watercolour painting workshop in Smythesdale next month.

The class, which costs $45 and includes all materials, is designed to be a fun and informal way to explore watercolour painting and learn new skills.

Grundell said the aim of the session is to allow participants the opportunity to explore their creative side without worrying about buying materials or cleaning up the mess afterwards.

“It’s not so much about the tuition kind of thing it’s about supplying people with the opportunity and materials and paints,” she said.

“It will be a series of exercises about how the colours interact together, painting techniques and a few simple shapes.

“I chose watercolour for the simplicity as it’s a quick clean up and you don’t have to wait hours for anything to dry.”

The main thing Grundell said she hopes people take from the experience is an understanding of whether watercolour is something they’d like to peruse further.

“I hope people get to have a go at watercolour and discover they want to go on with it or realise it’s not for them and try something else,” she said.

It is hoped this first workshop will be the start of many sessions showcasing different mediums and techniques.

“Hopefully they’ll be lots of different workshops with watercolour, then acrylics, then painting of mushrooms and wreath making,” said Grundell.

“They’ll be lots of different things if the community has the interest.”

The workshop will be held at Thru the Gate Café on Wednesday 4 October from 11am to 1pm.
