MEMBERS of the Smythesdale Walking Group are encouraging the community to get active and enjoy nature with a walk through the Surface Hill mining area later this month.

The 9.2-kilometre walk is suitable for adults with a moderate level of fitness, starting and finishing at the Camp Kitchen at Smythesdale.

Walkers will head south from the Smythesdale Gardens along the Ballarat/Skipton Rail Trail, eventually reaching a water point and passing old gold mining shafts and water races.

The route then continues up Doctors Road, Incolls Road and then turns west to begin the descent to Argyle Dam and Brewery Dam.

“Smythesdale and the surrounding area was a very popular gold mining area back in the day,” said Denny van Maanenberg, walks coordinator at the Smythesdale Walking Group.

“I believe there was many, many tonnes of gold removed from the area and of course the miners have left behind a whole range of bits and pieces that show the extent of the mining operations here.

“Some of that area is quite unique and worthwhile taking a look at.”

Walkers are advised to bring water, sunscreen, walking boots, wet weather gear and a hat.

Tea, coffee and nibbles will be provided at the conclusion of the walk.

Mr. van Maanenberg said there are many benefits to walking including increasing fitness, breathing fresh air and meeting new people.

“It’s the fresh air, it’s the exercise and its walking with likeminded people that enjoy the outdoors,” he said.

“We walk every Thursday from the gardens, and after the walk everyone brings along some refreshments.

“Sometimes that’s just as engaging as the walk itself.”
