Women invited for golf club clinic
POTENTIAL golfers are being encouraged to try their hand at a swing on the green as part of a free women’s golf clinic organised by members of the Inverleigh Golf Club.
The session is set to take place early next month, with Anglesea Golf Club member and former Ladies European Tour competitor Vicky Uwland hosting.
Inverleigh Golf Club women’s captain Deb Nicholls said the two-hour event will teach women the essentials on how to have a hit.
“It’ll really go back to the basics and start with how to have the correct grip and the correct stance and the correct swing,” she said.
“More ladies means more members and more ladies playing sport. It’s a social atmosphere too. When ladies get into golf, they have a lot of fun.”
About five free women’s clinics were held last year thanks to a grant from the Bendigo Community Bank Winchelsea branch.
With the sessions having run for close to a decade, Nicholls said their success last year led to 12 new women joining the club.
The Inverleigh Golf Club currently has about 20 and 40 female and male members respectively, and she said there’s definitely a need for more women taking part in the sport.
“This is designed to get more ladies into golf,” she said. “Lady golfers are hard to get for various reasons. They’re busy with family, work, whatever.
“Golf can be a little bit daunting and intimidating so we find if we offer these free clinics and get them they usually enjoy themselves, get hooked very quickly and want to keep going.”
Nicholls said more may be held this year following the upcoming one should the demand be there.
The free women’s golf session will take place on Thursday, 4 May.
