STARTING this month, there will be a series of emergency management workshops to help communities in Golden Plains Shire prepare for a disaster.

The Recovery to Resilience workshops aim to empower the Golden Plains Shire community with knowledge and skills to prepare for the future and establish community recovery hubs in Teesdale, Inverleigh and Shelford.

The hubs are community led places which will provide information and support in the event of an emergency.

The workshops will cover topics such as reflecting on recent floods and identifying risks to individuals and communities.

Attendees will also learn about developing a personal emergency management plan and there will be opportunities to interact with members of the SES, Country Fire Authority and Red Cross.

Mayor Cr Brett Cunningham said it is important residents have emergency management knowledge.

“In a disaster situation, official services and emergency response agencies will often be stretched with urgent priorities taking precedence,” he said.

“Establishing community recovery hubs in local Golden Plains Shire towns will give residents a focal point where they can ask for help, share resources and find the latest information.

“These workshops will provide an understanding of the impact relating to recent flooding events, develop community-led recovery initiatives and offer training and planning to assist in the preparation for future emergency events.”

The first workshop will be held in Shelford on Monday 20 May, with the second session to be in Inverleigh on Monday 3 June.

The last workshop will be held in Inverleigh on Tuesday 20 June.
