THIS school holidays it’s the perfect time to try new things, make new friends and learn new skills.

With that in mind young people are being encouraged to connect and learn professional skills through a youth program this winter break

Three youth spaces will be available during the holidays for young people aged 12 to 18 years, while opportunities to develop professional skills will be available through a barista course and blended first air course.

Golden Plains Shire mayor Cr Helena Kirby said she encourages young residents and families to make the most of the opportunities.

“The school holiday programs are a great opportunity for young people to connect and meet new friends, while developing valuable skills, in a safe and inclusive environment,” she said.

The three youth spaces will operate between 1pm and 5pm at Bannockburn Youth Lounge on Wednesday, 30 June, The Well in Smythesdale on Thursday, 1 July and Meredith Community Centre on Thursday, 8 July.

The spaces will offer a range of activities, music and healthy food and drinks for and will be supervised by the Shire’s youth development staff.

The professional skill development courses are open to young people aged 15 and over who are looking for work in the community.

The barista skills training will take place from 3.30pm to 6.30pm on Wednesday, 29 June at Coco’s Espresso Frew in Bannockburn.

The blended first aid course, which features an online component as well as in-person training, will take place at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre from 1pm to 4pm on Tuesday, 6 July.

“Council is committed to providing opportunities for young people to build capacity and learn professional skills that better equip them for the future,” Cr Kirby said.

“These supervised spaces and programs are inclusive and designed to appeal to the strengths and interests of young people across the Shire, while focusing on the importance of connection, personal development and community.”
