Suburb by suburb snapshot: Golden Point

The size of Golden Point is approximately 1.9 square kilometres and has 12 parks covering nearly 28.5 per cent of total area.

The population of Golden Point in 2011 was 2,186 people and by the 2016 Census the population was 2,094 showing a population decline of 4.2 per cent in the area during that time.

Gold was discovered at Poverty Point, off Clayton Street, in August 1851 which brought gold diggers to the area, but its surface metal was nearly worked out by November, and it took a second find to change ‘Poverty’ to ‘Golden’.

Golden Point is a hill nearly 1km south of the Poverty Point monument and is now in the Sovereign Hill Historical Park.

Golden Point consists of many reserves such as Llanberris Reserve, there is also the Peady Street Reserve, once a weed infested wasteland that has been revegetated since 1982.

Its eastern edge leads to Sovereign Hill, Golden Point’s and Ballarat’s most visited tourist destination since being established in 1970.

CoreLogic data indicates that the predominant age group in Golden Point is 20-29 years with households in Golden Point being primarily childless couples and are likely to be repaying $1,000 – $1,399 per month on mortgage repayments, and in general, people in Golden Point work in a professional occupation.

In 2011, 60.1 per cent of the homes in Golden Point were owner-occupied compared with 56.4 per cent in 2016.
