City Oval becomes the Cattery
DESPITE being played on neutral territory, City Oval hosted another epic encounter between the Cats and Eagles this past Sunday.
Newlyn walked away with the chocolates and advanced straight through to the preliminary finals in the Bendigo & Rural Bank Central Highlands Football League, with a commanding 11.11 (77) to Gordon 7.12 (54) win.
Once again, spearhead, Marcus Darmody was clinical up forward with six crunch goals to take his season tally up to a remarkable 109, while Myles Sewell put on a show all afternoon in the midfield with his class the difference in this one.
For the Eagles, Adam Toohey and Brendan Sutcliffe did manage five majors between them but couldn’t drag Gordon across the line off their own boots like they have several times throughout the regular season.
Newlyn lead all day with a five goal to one second term followed by a four to zero third to put this one to bed.
The star power of Cats may be the difference as they have now firm as premiership favourites with Darmody, Sewell and even coach Dan Wehrung showing regularly that when they are on, they’re just too good to be stopped.
The win means the Cats progress and join Waubra in the preliminary finals as the Eagles have a date next Sunday against the reigning premiers, Beaufort, who knocked out Springbank with a 22-point victory.
