THE annual Geordie Fawcett Memorial Cup event hit the Ballarat Light Car Club’s Motor Sport Complex at the Ballarat Airport recently.

Stawell’s Reg Johnson said his “old school” Mitsubishi Galant won the main event in 83.74 seconds.

The cup has run for over 60 years and each competitor drives an individually timed lap of the 1400m unsealed autocross track.

Michele Bayley, BLCC treasurer, was impressed with the turn out. “To get 41 cars was really good going.”

New racer, Matthew Dillon, said it was “tons of fun.”

“Great support and comradery to make a newcomer feel very welcome,” he said.

The Cup’s namesake is former BLCC member, Geordie Fawcett who died in a light plane crash in the 1990s.

Established in 1949, the club is looking for land to create a track elsewhere, due to Mitchell Park’s industrial growth.

“It will be such a shame to lose out there,” Mrs Bayley said.
