King for a day

EVAN King reigned supreme in the fifty-five-kilometre handicap staged by Eureka Cycling staged on Sunday, 20 March.

Fast times were realised by all bunches in the perfect racing conditions on the Mount Beckworth circuit.

King’s 14-minute group was caught by the nine rider strong nine-minute bunch with 20 kilometres remaining.

Racing through the rest of the field, the large bunch soon had the race lead and the win was almost certain.

In the run to the finish line, a number of brave attempts to ride off the front were shut down by the pack, ensuring a sprint would decide the day.

James Knipe looked the winner until King edged ahead in the shadows of the chequered flag.

Mount Beckworth 55-kilometre race results: 1st – Evan King (14 min), 2nd – James Knipe (14 min), 3rd – Peter Canny (9 min), 4th – Jake Miocic (9 min), 5th – Rick Calvert (9 min). Fastest Time – Tim Canny (scratch) in 1h 20m 30s, ave. 41.1kph.
