SEBASTOPOL Bowling Club has had a good start to the Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region season with most of the clubs Saturday Pennant sides enjoying success.

The majority are placed in the top four positions with the Division 1 and 9 sides just out but within contention on 12 and 21 points out respectively, while the Division 8 squad sits just three points adrift.

Saturday’s Division 3 home game should be a good contest with Sebas taking on Bungaree, who are also in good form, with the winner likely to take second take on the ladder.

Meanwhile, Sebastopol vice-president and social organiser Craig Mead said, “There is a quite a buzz around the club this season with things back to a bit of normality and our after game social nights are well patronised by the bowlers. Everybody is pretty upbeat about things around the club.”

Next year Sebas will celebrate life member and club stalwart Margaret Cassells’ 90th birthday on Sunday, 26 March.

The afternoon will be themed and all members from the wider Ballarat bowls community are invited to come along and celebrate with the Cassells family – the only requirement is you must bring along a single rose for entry.

Sebastopol’s Great Southern Classic Men’s Fours tournament is set for Sunday, 26t February and retains strong interest in the Ballarat bowls calendar with great prizes on offer.

That’s preceded by the Ladies Triples tournament on Thursday, 16 February while the Christmas Mixed Fours comp goes on Wednesday, 28 December and provides bowlers the opportunity to roll over the festive season.

All entries for the tournaments can be made with Rob Baker by phoning 0400 577 553.

Club bowlers Noel Sutherland and Ian Warner remain in contention for the BHBR Men’s Over 60’s Pairs championship and will play in the Quarter finals at Ballarat North bowling club on Thursday for the title.

Saturday Pennant goes under lights

THIS round’s Saturday Pennant Division 1 match between Ballarat and BMS will be a little different.

Firstly, it’s set for Friday night, and more importantly it’ll be the first game played under the newly installed lights at BMS revamped home greens.

To make matters even better the current forecast is for what should be ideal weather conditions.

Visitors are welcome to come and be entertained by a great game of bowls and refreshments will be available.

Tournament set to beat

ENTRIES into this season’s Heartbeat Tournament, set for Sunday, 8 January are now open and can be lodged with either Ross Jones on 0417 108 508 or Lionel Calf on 0417 093 001 by 2 January.

The tournament will be jointly hosted by the Ballarat and City Oval bowling clubs on behalf of the Ballarat Highlands Bowling Club with great prizes, raffles and a joyful day.

Money raised on the day goes towards the region’s hospitals.
