Stanaway crowned champ of champs
BY MARG WILKINS
THE final of the Women’s Champion of Champions was a nail-biting affair between Debbie Gorin from Victoria B.C. and Debbie Stanaway representing Beaufort Bowling Club.
Held at the Ballarat Bowling Club last week, and with storms looming, there was concern that the game would be not be played. Fortunately, under threatening skies it was not interrupted.
Gorin started confidently and by the fifth-end led by five shots. On each end only a marker was scored by both women and the difference at the end of the tenth end still remained at five in favour of the Victorian champion.
Stanaway then started to control the game, on the 10th she scored three shots to only be two behind. By end 14 she was in front by two.
It was then Gorin’s turn to take control, re-gaining the lead and by end 19 she was six in front. The momentum then swung back in favour of Stanaway who by the 30th lead by five shots.
With the score at 24-19 in favour of the Beaufort champion, Gorin tried to save the game, and with an accurate drive that saved three shots to keep her in with a winning chance. With the end near there was only one in it in favour of Stanaway and on end 33 she played the winning shot to reach the 25 necessary to claim the title.
