Sunbury Silence Kangaroo Juggernaut

July 17, 2019 BY

IN mostly beautiful wintery conditions, Sunbury have announced themselves as McDonalds Ballarat Football League contenders with a 16-point win over the reigning premiers East Point at Clarke Oval, winning 8.19 (67) to 6.15 (51).

The game saw the debut of mercurial forward Jarrah Maksymow in the senior lineup for the Lions and the spearhead didn’t take long to get on the board with a goal in the opening 30 seconds of the match being one of the highlights but also the catalyst for a solid four goal outing.

Coach, Travis Hodgson, says the club is ‘elated’ to have Maksymow out there every week and agrees with most pundits that, “He could be the difference between just making up the numbers and going all the way in 2019.”

The win for the Lions means they are now just one game off top spot in fifth place, and with games against the Ballarat Swans and the struggling Panthers in the coming weeks, there is no reason the club can’t push for another minor premiership.

“Without disrespecting our coming opposition, because the league is so tight this year and there is no easy game, but wins like this has given us a really good opportunity to open up our season,” Hodgson said.

East Point still remain on top of the ladder but are now level on points with both Darley and Redan, meaning that the Kangaroos can’t afford any more slipups on the quest to another finals campaign and especially any this week against an out of form Lakers outfit.
