Towners dare to topple Eagles

Gordon v Dunnstown

MATCH of the round in the Central Highlands Football League as two of the competition’s heavyweights go to it, with the Eagles hosting the Towners.

Gordon was seemingly unchallenged in their round one encounter by Daylesford with ever reliable Adam Toohey again leading the way in victory with four goals.

The Towners were inaccurate but dominant in victory over Buninyong as they announced their intentions to be flag contenders in season 2022.

Both sides recruited strongly in the off-season, raiding the Bacchus Marsh Football Club with the Griffith brothers jumping across to the Eagles and the impressive Thomas Wardell to the Towners.

Wardell could find himself one out with Toohey inside forward 50 in a mouth-watering head-to-head matchup, with this pundit just sniffing the momentum to stick with the slight underdogs.

Prediction: Dunnstown in an upset

 

Clunes v Ballan

Unfortunately for Blues fans, what once was presented as a big opportunity to record a victory now looks like a tall task as they travel to take on the Maggies.

An almost 200-point thumping in round one was the most disastrous start whereas Clunes got an important victory over Creswick in their quest to sneak into the finals.

Prediction: Clunes go back-to-back.

 

Buninyong v Learmonth

After a round one spanking of their own, the Bombers look to bounce back this week as they host the Lakies.

The Bombers gave up 33 shots on goal against Dunnstown with the Towners inaccuracy the only thing leaving some respectability on the scoreboard.

The Lakies will smell blood in the water going into this one, but the class level between the two sides could act as the difference.

Prediction: Buninyong by 12 points

 

Hepburn v Daylesford

Archrivals go to battle as the Burra and Bulldogs meet in what is expected to be a one sided affair.

Both teams were involved in heavy score lines two weekends ago, with the Burra being the first side to break the 200-point barrio in season 2022, whereas the Doggies were embarrassed by the best side of last season.

Being traditional rivals, you can expect a little more spice in Daylesford’s performance this week but no one can realistically think they could challenge the competition’s more dominate side since the turn of the millennium.

Prediction: Hepburn comfortably

 

Newlyn v Waubra

Where is Waubra at? That question will be answered this Saturday afternoon when they take on Newlyn in their first matchup of the season.

With a mass exodus over summer, it will be up to premiership coach Matty James to dive deep into his bag of tricks if the ‘Roos want to record victory.

On the flipside, Cats coach Chris Banwell pulled out his trump card, pulling on the boots himself for the first time in Newlyn colours in last rounds loss to Learmonth.

Prediction: Waubra in a tight one

 

Rokewood-Corindhap v Carngham-Linton

Upstaged by Bungaree in round one, the Hoppers will be thankful a matchup with the competitions cellar dwellers awaits them in round two.

The Saints were competitive under lights against the much more fancied Skipton, only losing by 10 goals.

That positive outlook will have to be on full display here, or the Hoppers will bounce back in a big way to claim yet another Battle of the Golden Plains.

Prediction: Rokewood-Corindhap gets there season back on track

 

Springbank v Bungaree

Both these sides walk into round two with victories under their belts.

The Tigers hammered the Crows with Todd Finco booting five goals in the 100-point victory whereas the Demons shocked the footy world with a win over the much more fancied Rokewood-Corindhap.

Will lightning strike twice? We will have to wait and see.

Prediction: Springbank by 24 points.

 

Skipton v Creswick

Another opportunity for the Emu’s to stake their claim as the real deal when the host the Wickers in.

Sam Willian’s side’s best footy is arguably the very best in the competition and against Creswick they will get plenty of opportunity to show the world what they are fully capable of.

Prediction: Skipton by plenty.
