Warriors create friendships and active lifestyles

AROUND fifty-five footballers and thirty netballers hit Haddon Recreation Reserve last weekend for Woady Yaloak Football Netball Club’s first junior ‘try out’ day.

Assessing those keen to join the club in the Under 9 sides of the Ballarat Football League’s 2020 season, the Woady Warriors got children engaged in kicking, marking, agility tests, netball drills and more.

Steve Sheehan’s seven-year-old son, Billy tried out for the football team. Mr Sheehan said it’s an exciting time, supporting a group that’s “starting at zero.

“It’s a whole new entity. We’re getting on board early, watching it flourish, build and grow,” he said.

“You see a lot of the same faces from athletics or Auskick, and already there’s new faces. This is a good opportunity for them to start becoming involved in the community.

“It will keep the kids active and a lot of them will make new friends.”

Woady Warriors president, Adam Liversage said attendee numbers exceeded the club’s expectations on Sunday.

“It holds us in good stead to get our numbers up and I’m quite comfortable we’ll get our teams in the Under 9s this year,” he said.

“I’m sure we’re going to get really good NetSetGo numbers this year as well, which will hold us in good stead to get an Under 11s netball team into the BFNL next year as well.”

The Woady Warriors are a brand-new club, approved to play in the BFL’s Western Bulldogs Under 9 Friday comp late last year. They will absorb players and families from the north of Golden Plains Shire and Ballarat’s far west.

Thirteen sponsors are on board including Avalon Nursery and Prestige Denture Clinic. Eleven of those financial supporters are based in the area local to Haddon Recreation Reserve.
