WBBL set for Sunday at Eastern Oval

WOMEN’S Twenty20 cricket slog-fest, the WBBL, will take to Eastern Oval this Sunday as the Melbourne Renegades battle the Adelaide Strikers.

The Renegades are coming off a six-wicket loss to the Sydney Thunder last game and allrounder Sophie Molineux said the side was looking to bounce back.

“We were disappointed with the way we started the season,” she said. “Everyone sort of got in throughout the week and there was a few coming in from the World Cup.

“There is no excuses with the way we went out there and didn’t put the score we wanted on the board, but our bowling was really good and I think we can take away positive away from that.

“We’ll change a few things and get it right this weekend.”

Molineux and spinner Georgia Wareham were both members of the recent women’s Twenty20 World Cup winning squad and have just returned from the West Indies.

Both also hail from regional Victoria with Molineux from Bairnsdale and Wareham from Mortlake, and the match will be special place for the pair.

“It’s pretty cool being kind of home and I think it’s obviously pretty cool I’m going to be seeing a lot of family here,” Wareham said.

Although the Renegades are set to play back-to-back matches this weekend, Molineux said the workload won’t be an issue.

“We’ve had to do that over the last few years,” she said. “In Big Bash One there were days where we were playing two games, so that shouldn’t be an issue.”

Sunday’s game isn’t the end of top-level women’s cricket in the region with the Renegades holding their family day in Geelong on Sunday, 16 December.

Molineux said the family day event was always a great time and this year the men will be the curtain raiser and the women’s side the main event.

“We’re really excited,” she said. “The fact that we’re playing after the men is really exciting and something we haven’t done before and even if it’s a practice match you’re still going to get a fair few keen supporters there.”

Adelaide Strikers v Melbourne Renegades goes this Sunday, 9 December from 2.10pm at Eastern Oval.

Melbourne Renegades v Brisbane Heat is set for Sunday, 16 December at Geelong Cricket Oval. The gates for the family day open at 10am with the women’s match getting underway at 2pm.
