MEMBERS of the Cape Clear Fire Brigade are looking for organisations to sponsor a commemorative event for the thirtieth anniversary of the Berringa Enfield forest fire.<\/p>\n

Starting on 25 February 1995, the fire burned out of control for most of the weekend and threatened the towns of Dereel, Little Hard Hills, Napoleons, Ross Creek, Smythesdale, Scarsdale, Staffordshire Reef and Berringa.<\/p>\n

It was caused by an unattended campfire on a Total Fire Ban day, and although no people lost their lives, thousands of sheep, cattle, wildlife and domestic animals were killed.<\/p>\n

The total area burnt was 14,00 hectares and nine homes were destroyed.<\/p>\n

The anniversary weekend will include a mix of reflective and fun community events and Cape Clear CFA captain Jeremy Peet said they are looking for cash donations.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had some really great support from Lions and Apex to help out with feet on the ground in preparing food so it’s really looking for some cash support so we can pay for events,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We also need some extra infrastructure like toilets, but community groups have really pitched in with manpower.”<\/p>\n

Mr Peet said it will be beneficial for businesses to show they are working with the community.<\/p>\n

“If people can be associated with encouraging such a thing, community development and working together, that should be good for their brand,” he said.<\/p>\n

The weekend aims to educate the community on fire risks as well as commemorating the anniversary, and community members new and old are welcome.<\/p>\n

“It’s about awareness so you prepare better next time, and these fires had a big impact on people’s lives so it’s also good to remember,” Mr Peet said.<\/p>\n

“Trauma builds up and you need to release it; a problem shared is a problem halved.”<\/p>\n
