A NEW bin schedule has been implemented across Golden Plains Shire this month following the introduction of the purple-lidded glass recycling bin.<\/p>\n
The glass bin will be collected every four weeks, starting from the week beginning Monday 17 February.<\/p>\n
The collected glass will be taken to the Cleanaway South Geelong Transfer Station, where it will be processed into new bottles and jars.<\/p>\n
“Residents can now recycle all household glass bottles and jars in their new purple-lidded bin,” Golden Plains Shire CEO Shane Walden said.<\/p>\n
“Drinking glasses, Pyrex, ceramics and light bulbs should not go in the glass bin and should be placed in the general waste bin.”<\/p>\n
General waste will continue to be collected once a fortnight, while the frequency of mixed recycling will be reduced from weekly to once a fortnight.<\/p>\n
“The collection of the yellow recycling bin was changed from weekly to fortnightly to align with the standard service provided by most other Victorian councils,” Mr Walden said.<\/p>\n
“Our data shows that the average presentation rate for the yellow bins was on average 65 per cent when it was collected weekly, indicating an opportunity to improve the efficiency of this service to meet the needs of the community and manage costs for residents.”<\/p>\n
Under State Government legislation, all Local Government Areas must move to a four-bin system by 2030 to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.<\/p>\n
A food and garden organics, or FOGO, bin is expected to be implemented in Golden Plains Shire in 2027.<\/p>\n
“This four-bin system, which includes separate bins for general waste, mixed recycling, glass, and food and garden organics aims to divert 80 per cent of materials away from landfill by 2030,” Mr Walden said.<\/p>\n
