{"id":101592,"date":"2025-04-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=101592"},"modified":"2025-04-09T16:58:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T06:58:31","slug":"milestone-for-landcare-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/milestone-for-landcare-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Milestone for Landcare group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Upper Williamsons Creek Landcare group is turning 30, and will hold a formal celebration of the achievement tonight.<\/p>\n<p>It will take place from 6pm at the Scotsburn Hall and will feature a dinner and live music by The Hardies Hillbillies.<\/p>\n<p>And according to founding secretary and current committee member Andrea Mason, it will be a full-on party.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve invited as many past members as we can find,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Mason \u2013 who will be among official speakers at tonight&#8217;s celebration \u2013 said as many as 40 people had already confirmed their attendance.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from officially marking the 30-year milestone, it will be a time to reflect on all the work the Landcare group has done.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/UWCLG290723_3002cr_46394.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"577\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The group has a long list of projects to its credit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Mason said the group has had more than 180 paid-up members since it began, primarily on the basis of weed control with a focus on blackberry and gorse on local farmland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did a lot of campaigns on that in the early days,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Mason said other notable projects and campaigns have included protection work on Williamsons Creek, various work on and around Mount Buninyong, koala corridors, and a close collaboration with VicRoads as the Midland Highway was upgraded.<\/p>\n<p>She said the group was heavily involved in the recovery from the 2015 Scotsburn bushfire, which tore through 4000 hectares of land and destroyed a dozen houses.<\/p>\n<p>The 10-year anniversary of that disaster will take place in December this year.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being involved in the Landcare group&#8217;s founding, Ms Mason has also served as its chair.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/UpperWillimasonsCree_52593.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"574\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Landcare group has had upwards of 180 members since its formation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very proud of the group and what we&#8217;ve achieved over the years,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The group maintains strong links with the Scotsburn campus of the Buninyong Primary School, which runs its own junior Landcare program.<\/p>\n<p>The group&#8217;s area of responsibility covers Mount Buninyong, Lal Lal, Scotsburn and Clarendon.<\/p>\n<p>Its official focus is to protect and enhance natural resources within the region through on-ground works, educating the community and running community capacity-building activities.<\/p>\n<p>It meets every second Thursday of the month on even months of the year, at the Scotsburn Hall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Upper Williamsons Creek Landcare group is turning 30, and will hold a formal celebration of the achievement tonight.
