{"id":102522,"date":"2025-07-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=102522"},"modified":"2025-07-11T09:46:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T23:46:09","slug":"cape-clears-mr-d-marks-half-a-century-of-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/cape-clears-mr-d-marks-half-a-century-of-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Cape Clear&#8217;s Mr D marks half a century of teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAPE Clear Primary School&#8217;s own &#8216;Mr D&#8217; is celebrating fifty years of service to the Victorian Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p>Teacher Anthony Dillon was celebrated by students and staff on the last day of term two, having been a member of the Cape Clear PS community for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>Surprising Mr Dillon during assembly, principal Lynly Doherty said he was first introduced to the school as a casual relief teacher before being made an ongoing staff member.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We haven&#8217;t been able to get rid of him since,&#8221; she joked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s a great educator at our school, and how lucky we are to have him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can all acknowledge that 50 years is an incredible achievement and one that highlights dedication to the craft, commitment to the community, and resilience in what I can only imagine have been some challenging times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Heather Mr Dillon&#8217;s wife, I&#8217;m sure you can attest to the many sacrifices that Tony&#8217;s made along the way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From all of us, we want to say thank you and congratulations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dillon, who lives at Werneth, started his training at the Ballarat Teachers College in 1971 and took his first position at Berrybank Primary School in 1974.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102528\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102528\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-102528\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/07\/IMG_1500_48311-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/07\/IMG_1500_48311-1-rotated.jpg 800w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/07\/IMG_1500_48311-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/07\/IMG_1500_48311-1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/07\/IMG_1500_48311-1-768x1152.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anthony Dillon was presented with an award to commemorate the occasion.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From 1975 to 1978, he was based at Clear Lake Primary School before moving to work at Rokewood<\/p>\n<p>Primary School where he was based for 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>For the last 15 years of his career, he has been a classroom teacher at Cape Clear Primary School. He is now semi-retired and works one day a week at the 12-student school.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love teaching at small country schools,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rokewood was the biggest school I ever taught at. At the height, we had about 90 pupils at Rokewood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love country communities, being involved in the local community, and country kids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He reflects fondly on camps and excursions, and teaching with &#8220;great people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have a sense of purpose, a sense of community, and it is a great community,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/07\/IMG_1520_49392.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anthony Dillon has been teaching at Cape Clear for about 15 years, but was at Rokewood Primary School for three decades before that.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Dillon said her husband&#8217;s former students &#8211; some of them now 60 years old &#8211; remember him well.<\/p>\n<p>Former Cape Clear teacher, now Teesdale Primary School principal, Sam Irwin sent his congratulations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m privileged to have spent a few years with you at Cape Clear Primary,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We had some fantastic times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s such a wonderful achievement to have stayed dedicated to a profession for such a long time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meredith Primary School principal Lachlan Day is the former principal of Cape Clear. He said the impact Mr Dillon has made on students, staff and families has been incredible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fifty years is massive,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I loved working with you.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The time we spent together out at Cape Clear will forever be etched in my mind.
