THIS year’s Back to Steiglitz event next month will feature a major art exhibition as one of its main components.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will be staged in the St Thomas’ Roman Catholic Church building on Sunday 26 October and is open to anyone with an artistic drive and a desire to display their work.<\/p>\n

It is being curated by Back to Steiglitz Association committee member and artist Angela Hickey, who said the venue had not been used as an arts space before.<\/p>\n

“St Paul’s (Anglican Church) has, but I don’t think we’ve had one before in this space,” Ms Hickey said.<\/p>\n

Ms Hickey said the exhibition would be open to any form of artistic expression \u2013 painting, sculpting, pottery, ceramics and drawing, to name just a few \u2013 and the only limit on numbers would be space.<\/p>\n

She said about 20 local artists had already locked in exhibition space, but there was still plenty of room for many more.<\/p>\n

Ms Hickey said participants did not have to be professional and need not have sold their work before, but is hoping that pieces will focus on people’s stories and their connection with the area.<\/p>\n

“I just want to see what each person brings,” she said. “It will be a real celebration of people, of human connection.”<\/p>\n

An added item of interest will be a musical performance by The Inklings, from the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club, while Ms Hickey herself will direct a performance art piece.<\/p>\n

An art exhibition was first held as part of the Back to Steiglitz event in 2023.<\/p>\n

Ms Hickey said an exhibition was also held as part of local participation in the National Trust’s Australian Heritage Festival earlier this year, and had been a success.<\/p>\n

“People loved it,” she said.<\/p>\n

Ms Hickey said an exhibition of children’s artworks also might be held, although possibly at a separate venue.<\/p>\n

The cost for participating artists is $5 and, if artworks are sold, 20 per cent of the purchase price will go to the association.<\/p>\n
