Jack Martin’s Geelong grand final comeback is one of resilience and belief, as the veteran forward carries a monkey on his back into Saturday’s decider.<\/p>\n

Geelong forward Jack Martin will carry a monkey on his back into the AFL grand final, one he fears he might never be able to shake.<\/p>\n

Cut down by persistent injuries in recent seasons, the former Gold Coast and Carlton talent<\/a> has had to rebuild his body and mind to revive a career he thought about giving away.<\/p>\n

“The mental side of the game is the biggest challenge for me,” Martin told AAP<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Certainly this year and the last couple of years, even though my body’s feeling good physically, you’ve always got that little monkey on your back.<\/p>\n

“It’s sort of like, ‘Are you going to get through a game? Are you going to get through training?’<\/p>\n

“But I’ve done a mountain of work and I’m feeling really confident in my body.”<\/p>\n

A hugely talented junior, Martin played 97 games across six seasons with Gold Coast, before a big-money move to Carlton, where he managed just 54 games in five years as injuries took their toll.<\/p>\n

Last year he was restricted to just three games and considered hanging up the boots, before ultimately seeking a fresh start at a third club in one last roll of the dice.<\/p>\n

Buoyed after meeting with Geelong coach Chris Scott and football boss Andrew Mackie, Martin joined the Cats as a delisted free agent.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old then set about executing a fresh and meticulous plan laid out by Geelong\u2019s medical and high\u2011performance staff<\/a> to revive his career.<\/p>\n

“We really went after strength,” Martin said.<\/p>\n

“I spent weeks and months in the gym getting stronger and building my base of fitness, which has allowed me to back up week after week.”<\/p>\n

Martin eventually made his Cats debut in June and hasn’t missed since, playing 12 consecutive games and featuring everywhere from half-back to a forward pocket.<\/p>\n

He famously kicked four goals in a five-minute blitz against Port Adelaide last month and now looms as a grand final wildcard in this Jack Martin Geelong grand final campaign.<\/p>\n

“With this team there’s a fair bit of flexibility and magnets going everywhere,” Martin said.<\/p>\n

“I’m just happy to play any position, wherever I’m needed.”<\/p>\n

Martin kicked one goal from eight disposals in the preliminary final win over Hawthorn<\/a>, and when he crossed paths with Jack Bowes in the aftermath, the pair shared a sense of incredulity.<\/p>\n

Teammates at Gold Coast from 2017 to 2019, now reunited at Geelong, Martin and Bowes are pinching themselves about the chance to play in a grand final.<\/p>\n

“It’s funny … we just looked at each other and were like, ‘Wow’,” Martin said.<\/p>\n

“We were at the Suns together for three years and never played in September.<\/p>\n

“Speaking to my wife, if she had’ve asked me 12 months ago whether we’d be here this week I would’ve said she’s crazy.<\/p>\n

“I’m just enjoying every moment. I’ve missed a lot of footy over the years, so I’m embracing it all and super grateful to be here.”<\/p>\n

Martin is one of 10 likely starters for Geelong who haven’t previously played in a grand final, let alone won one.<\/p>\n

But their lack of experience is balanced by a dozen premiership players from 2022, led by captain Patrick Dangerfield among a handful who also featured in the losing 2020 decider.<\/p>\n

“It’s unfamiliar for me, this stuff,” Martin said.<\/p>\n

“Speaking to the guys that have been here and done it, everything’s just about enjoying the week and embracing it.<\/p>\n

“The older guys bring a calming steadiness to the group, and we’re super excited.<\/p>\n

“I feel like it’s a good mix and good balance.<\/p>\n

“And having Scotty at the helm as well, it’s grand final week but it’s another week taking care of business, doing what we’ve got to do.”<\/p>\n

“We make sure we do everything we do right and get out there Saturday and give it a good crack.”<\/p>\n

Geelong comfortably accounted for Brisbane in the qualifying final, but were beaten in the sides’ three previous encounters.<\/p>\n

“Three years in a row they’ve been in the grand final, so they’re a team we really respect,” Martin said.<\/p>\n

“Whatever happened three weeks ago, we’re looking ahead.”<\/p>\n

“We know what challenge we’ve got ahead of us on the weekend and we’re super excited, but we know it’s going to be tough.”<\/p>\n
