LIFE Saving Victoria (LSV) is urging the community to be water safe this week, with temperatures expected to soar towards 40 degrees.<\/p>\n

Victorians and visitors alike are expected to flock to the beach, pools and waterways in large numbers to beat the forecast hot weather tomorrow (Wednesday, January 7).<\/p>\n

Drowning numbers and other water-related incidents tend to increase significantly during hot conditions.<\/p>\n

LSV are encouraging everyone to follow several simple steps to keep themselves and others safe:<\/p>\n

– Swim at patrolled locations between the red and yellow flags, where volunteer lifesavers and paid lifeguards can assist if you get into trouble.<\/p>\n

– Supervise children at all times<\/p>\n

– Always swim with a friend<\/p>\n

– Avoid alcohol before going in the water<\/p>\n

– Check conditions and know your limits and capabilities, particularly if you\u2019re at an unfamiliar beach or waterway.<\/p>\n

– Check the Beachsafe app or go to beachsafe.org.au to find a swimming location that\u2019s safest.<\/p>\n

LSV will have increased paid lifeguard services at several locations to keep the public safe in the water.<\/p>\n

The community is also reminded that public swimming pools are among the safest places to swim, with lifeguards always on duty.<\/p>\n

Life Saving Victoria chief operations officer of emergency management capability and response, Kirsty Robertson, said no one wanted a day by the water to turn to tragedy.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne drowning is one too many, and we need everyone to do what they can to keep themselves and each other safe.<\/p>\n

“Water safety is everyone\u2019s responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n
