Residents in Kennedys Creek have also been advised to leave, while in Carlisle River, a shelter now emergency warning remains in place.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities say the fire is travelling in a north-easterly direction towards Carlisle River and Escarpment Road.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178121\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178121\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-178121\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-10-at-9.22.27-pm-1024x650.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"381\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Several communities in and around the Otway Ranges were urged to leave the area today as firefighters struggled to control several blazes. Photo: VIC EMERGENCY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Cape Otway and Maits Rest area were evacuated earlier in the day and, although the advice has since been downgraded to a Watch and Act alert, at last report, the area remains unsafe for residents to return.<\/p>\n<p>Haze from the fire blanketed much of the Surf Coast and Geelong region by mid-afternoon, placing more communities on edge.<\/p>\n<p>Further east, firefighters are still working to contain an out-of-control grassfire in Mount Mercer, near Meredith.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency warnings were upgraded to Watch and Act level late this afternoon, with residents in Bamganie and Meredith urged to monitor conditions as winds are forecast to shift overnight, potentially placing pressure of the fire\u2019s north-eastern edge.<\/p>\n<p>The fire has already burned more than 2,000 hectares in and around the Meredith State Forest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178123\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178123\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-178123\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/614858275_930451426214061_8414839189205690418_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Firefighters are still working to suppress an out-of-control grassfire in Mount Mercer, near Meredith. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Near Bendigo, fires burning between Harcourt and Ravenswood remain active, though some communities have been able to begin returning home. A Watch and Act warning is in place.<\/p>\n<p>Those coming home to Harcourt were met with a compromised water system, with the tap water deemed unsafe to drink.<\/p>\n<p>The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issued statewide air quality advice this evening, warning smoke and ash from the fires still raging across the state may drift long distances from the firegrounds.<\/p>\n<p>People sensitive to smoke \u2013 including those with heart or lung conditions, older residents, children and pregnant women \u2013 are urged to limit outdoor activity and take steps to reduce exposure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178124\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178124\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-178124\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/612228881_1324549259711021_6740736704453269097_n-961x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"639\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crews respond to grassfire in Anakie this morning.
