{"id":104648,"date":"2026-01-30T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=104648"},"modified":"2026-01-28T21:06:57","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T10:06:57","slug":"track-record-falls-as-leap-to-fame-gets-one-back-on-top-rival-in-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/sport\/track-record-falls-as-leap-to-fame-gets-one-back-on-top-rival-in-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"Track record falls as Leap To Fame gets one back on top rival in Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LEAP To Fame showed he wasn&#8217;t ready to relinquish his crown as Australasia&#8217;s No.1 pacer with a magnificent victory in the $100,000 Group 2 Ballarat Pacing Cup (2710m) last Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Grant Dixon&#8217;s champion seven-year-old got one back on his main rival Kingman, dominating the race from the moment he took the lead going into the first turn from his wide barrier seven draw, sealing a stirring triumph with a new track record of 1:54.4.<\/p>\n<p>Luke McCarthy&#8217;s superstar Kingman could only manage fourth place, his chances dealt a blow after drawing on the back row, as the Aaron Dunn-trained pair Dee Roe, driven by Jackie Barker, and Forty Love (Dunn) filled the minor placings 11-plus metres behind the winner.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Times in the lead-up to Cup night, Ballarat and District Trotting Club CEO Paul Rowse declared the track record, set by Smolda in winning the 2017 cup, was under threat.<\/p>\n<p>He was right on two counts, with a new 2200m trotting record set one race earlier by the winner of the Group 2 Bendigo Trotters Cup, Keayang Zahara.<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, it was Leap To Fame&#8217;s first time on the Ballarat track.<\/p>\n<p>The son of Bettors Delight and Australasia&#8217;s richest prize-winning pacer made amends for losses to Kingman in each of their three previous meetings, bouncing back in style with a superb performance.<\/p>\n<p>Champion Queensland trainer-driver Dixon said he always believed Leap To Fame could bounce back from his second behind Kingman in the previous week&#8217;s Group 3 Shepparton Pacing Cup (2690m).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had the draw tonight and that&#8217;s obviously the difference, but it was just nice for Larry (his stable name) to get the win up,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He felt good. We didn&#8217;t know where to go from here tonight if he didn&#8217;t go well, but we&#8217;re so pleased with him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The main thing was trying to keep the jump on Kingman because I think whoever gets the better trip is the victor at the moment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/01\/LeapToFameBallaratPa_98364.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"438\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leading trainer-driver Grant Dixon and wife Trista celebrate Ballarat Pacing Cup glory with Leap To Fame.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were happy that we were ahead of him, but (barrier) seven was still going to be reasonably difficult.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite bypassing the first leg of the Summer of Glory series in the Group 2 Bendigo Pacing Cup and having to settle for second at Shepparton, Leap To Fame&#8217;s Ballarat win has revived hopes of his connections landing the lucrative $1 million bonus on offer.<\/p>\n<p>The $1 million will be paid on any pacer who can win four legs of the series, including the $250,000 Group 1 Hunter Cup at Melton on 14 February.<\/p>\n<p>Leap To Fame would need to win this Saturday night&#8217;s $150,000 Group 1 Cranbourne Pacing Cup and the $150,000 Group 1 Kilmore Pacing Cup a week later to be alive going into the Hunter Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Dixon admitted the bonus was very much in the front of his mind.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s why we decided to come down early, to have a try,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The dream&#8217;s still alive a little bit now; it&#8217;s going to be super hard to do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But if you don&#8217;t have a go you&#8217;ll never know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A winner of 62 of 80 starts and placed 16 times, Leap To Fame boosted his career earnings to an unthinkable $5,083,859.<\/p>\n<p>Kingman, placed in the Group 2 Bendigo Pacing Cup before winning at Shepparton, remains a live chance for the bonus, as is Bulletproof Boy, who finished fifth on Saturday night, after entering the night as the defending Ballarat Cup champion.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a disappointing night for Kingman, his trainer Luke McCarthy was able to land the quinella in the Group 3 Make Mine Cullen mares feature, with Steno ($10) upstaging her more fancied stablemate Eye Keep Smiling ($1.25 favourite) for an exciting win.<\/p>\n<p>An impressive winner on debut at Maryborough for Cardigan trainer Emma Stewart earlier this month, Signature Look underlined his potential by winning the Colin and Heather Holloway 3YO Classic (2200m) early on the program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LEAP To Fame showed he wasn&#8217;t ready to relinquish his crown as Australasia&#8217;s No.1 pacer with a magnificent victory in the $100,000 Group 2 Ballarat Pacing Cup (2710m) last Saturday night.
