{"id":104919,"date":"2026-02-17T14:13:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T03:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/fighting-for-the-right-to-play\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T09:02:40","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T22:02:40","slug":"fighting-for-the-right-to-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/fighting-for-the-right-to-play\/","title":{"rendered":"Fighting for the right to play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the women of Kyneton\u2019s football community walked away from their club at the end of 2024, it was not because they had fallen out of love with the game.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-radius: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/4ygIdu27sVGhCo5c6YhZky?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>It was because they wanted to play it with dignity.<\/p>\n<p>On the latest episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/7evSHje7F1gZ9pUwiFCWHC?si=af9559f275744a4c\">Women Out Loud<\/a>, hosts Amy McElgunn, Courtney Weybury and Dr Niamh Logue sat down with Kyneton Women\u2019s Football Club president Natalie Korinfsky and players Marnie Love and Peta Pemberton to unpack a 15-month battle that at the time had left a premiership-contending team without a place to play.<\/p>\n<p>Korinfsky said the decision to leave their former club followed \u201cpretty ongoing poor treatment\u201d and \u201cpretty shocking conditions at the club rooms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was just a general sense of disrespect and the lack of care and support for our team,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For years, players tolerated substandard facilities and cultural double standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs most women would experience in footy clubs, you kind of just suck it up and move on,\u201d Korinfsky said.<\/p>\n<p>Love described walking into change rooms littered with dirty clothing and empty cans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that just sent a message to our team that don\u2019t worry about it, it\u2019s only the girls,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Repeated requests for change, the women say, went largely unaddressed.<\/p>\n<p>In response, players, coaches and volunteers formed an independent club, the Kyneton Wedge-Tailed Eagles, built on inclusion, respect and a sense of real community.<\/p>\n<p>They were unanimously accepted into the Central Victoria Football League for the 2026 season. An eleventh-hour appeal by their former league temporarily blocked the move.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-180687 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/17.02.2026_12.19.21_REC.png?_t=1771298011\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Kyneton Women\u2019s Football Club has now received formal written approval to compete in the Central Victoria Football League in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>AFL Victoria waived the standard new club admission deadline to allow the application to be considered on its merits.<\/p>\n<p>Korinfsky said the approval represented far more than just a place in a competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an incredibly significant day for our players and our community. Our group has remained united and resilient throughout this process, and today\u2019s outcome ensures they will be able to take the field together, as the club they have built,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were compromises along the way, but we have stood firm on what matters most \u2014 the right for our players to compete as their own entity, in an environment that is safe, supportive and respectful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond governance disputes, the conversation highlighted broader structural issues facing women\u2019s sport in regional communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo slap on a women\u2019s side to a club, yeah, it looks really good on paper,\u201d Korinfsky said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when you scratch a little more below the surface, are we actually doing everything right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vinall said even on-field success did not shift attitudes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were in finals and premierships, but even that wasn\u2019t enough,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For Pemberton, football provided belonging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just found this group of really powerful women who didn\u2019t necessarily feel like they fit in in other spaces in society,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re becoming family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Korinfsky said the club\u2019s values centre on inclusion, respect and community contribution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou walk through the doors and you\u2019ve got a place at our club, no matter who you are,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>As the Wedge-Tailed Eagles now prepare for their inaugural CVFL season in 2026, their message to community clubs remains clear: listen early, listen often, and build cultures where belonging is not an afterthought but a foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Because taking up space in sport is not a privilege.<\/p>\n<p>It is a right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the women of Kyneton\u2019s football community walked away from their club at the end of 2024, it was not because they had fallen out of love with the game.
