This was never going to be a side that burst out of the blocks. The real question is whether they\u2019re building the right way and I think they are.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"298\" data-end=\"382\">They\u2019re 2\u20131, and inside the four walls that\u2019s exactly where you\u2019d expect them to be.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"384\" data-end=\"695\">The loss to Gold Coast wasn\u2019t great, but that\u2019s a trip that\u2019s getting harder every year. They responded the right way against Fremantle and then did what good sides do against Adelaide. It wasn\u2019t pretty, but they controlled the game and banked the win. That matters early in the year when you\u2019re not flying yet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"384\" data-end=\"695\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-radius: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/show\/7s7Hq2MqZi0bh9Zpwu12xf?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-testid=\"embed-iframe\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"926\">I\u2019ve been in teams like that. You come off a grand final, the pre-season is shorter, the intensity drops just a touch whether you like it or not, and it takes a few weeks to get your edge back. That\u2019s where Geelong are right now.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"928\" data-end=\"965\">So I\u2019m not concerned. Not even close.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"967\" data-end=\"1010\">Where it gets interesting is Easter Monday.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1257\">That game has become more than just another fixture. I remember when it started back in 2010. We were 30 points down that day and came back to win. That\u2019s where the streak against Hawthorn really took off and where the rivalry took another step.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1292\">And make no mistake, it was real.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1496\">We hated them and they hated us. It wasn\u2019t theatre, it wasn\u2019t for show. It came from losing a grand final in 2008 and carrying that edge into every game after that.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1680\">You can feel that stuff as a player. You know during the week it\u2019s different. Training sharpens, meetings get a bit more pointed, and there\u2019s a bit more feeling in everything you do.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1721\">That\u2019s why Easter Monday still matters.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1954\">Hawthorn are coming again. They\u2019re better than they\u2019ve been for a few years and with Sam Mitchell coaching, there\u2019s still that connection to the old battles. Chris Scott is still there for Geelong. The history hasn\u2019t gone anywhere.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"2003\">This one will tell us where Geelong really sit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2275\">The other big watch is Patrick Dangerfield. At his age, with a couple of soft tissue issues already, this is where the club needs to be smart. I wouldn\u2019t be rushing him back for Hawthorn, and I\u2019d be just as cautious the following week at Gather Round against West Coast.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2277\" data-end=\"2338\">I\u2019d be giving him four or five weeks if that\u2019s what it takes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2340\" data-end=\"2577\">I know what the temptation is. Big game, big stage, your captain wants to play. But you don\u2019t win anything in April. You need him right in August and September. Once those injuries start creeping in at his age, they don\u2019t just disappear.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2579\" data-end=\"2891\">And this is where the history with Hawthorn actually ties in. Dangerfield\u2019s first game for Geelong came against the Hawks on Easter Monday in 2016. He had 43 disposals, 21 contested possessions and seven clearances. That tells you the level he can get to when he\u2019s right. That\u2019s why you don\u2019t compromise him now.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2893\" data-end=\"3131\">Geelong\u2019s draw actually gives them that luxury. Hawthorn on Easter Monday, then West Coast at Gather Round. They can manage him through that stretch and still get results. That\u2019s what good clubs do. They think long term, not week to week.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3133\" data-end=\"3377\">Then you look ahead to the Western Bulldogs on a Friday night at GMHBA Stadium. That\u2019s the one that jumps out for me. The Dogs are a serious side and that\u2019s the type of game where you find out if your system stacks up against another contender.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3379\" data-end=\"3465\">That\u2019s the block for Geelong now. Hawthorn, West Coast at Gather Round, then the Dogs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3467\" data-end=\"3552\">If they come out of that in good shape, you know they\u2019re right where they need to be.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3554\" data-end=\"3633\">So don\u2019t overreact to the start. They\u2019re not flying, but they don\u2019t need to be.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3635\" data-end=\"3804\">The standard at Geelong has always been about building, not chasing early-season headlines.
