GRAMPIANS Health has expanded its haematology service, providing patients at Ballarat and beyond with access to a haematologist at any time.<\/p>\n
A haematologist treats blood disorders and cancers such as leukaemia, myeloma and lymphoma and the 24\/7 service is being delivered through clinics by a growing team of specialists serving Ballarat and the wider region.<\/p>\n
Head of haematology at Grampians Health Dr Swe Htet said the model aims to reduce health inequity and ensure patients get timely care close to home.<\/p>\n
“Our goal is to deliver the same level of specialist haematology care available in metropolitan areas,” Dr Htet said.<\/p>\n
“By providing round-the-clock support and expanding outreach services, we are reducing unnecessary travel for those in the region and ensuring patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”<\/p>\n
Prior to having a 24\/7 haematology service, patients requiring specialist care had to travel to Melbourne or were transferred if they needed extensive or immediate care.<\/p>\n
A recent emergency case highlighted the impact of the new model after a patient from Stawell presented after hours with a life-threatening white cell count and suspected acute leukaemia.<\/p>\n
The ability of Grampians Health haematology staff to immediately review the case meant urgent, lifesaving chemotherapy was arranged and delivered in Ballarat that same night.<\/p>\n
The patient remained in local care for their full care pathway and is now in remission.<\/p>\n
Dr Htet said having Grampians Health doctors living and working in the region means they understand the needs of the community better and can tailor their treatment plans accordingly.<\/p>\n
“Since we understand the local services, we can tailor our recommendations for follow up care closer to home,” he said.<\/p>\n
“This means fewer unnecessary transfers, quicker access to treatment, and more patients being safely managed close to home.”<\/p>\n
Grampians Health has grown its haematology team over the past two years so it now comprises seven part-time consultants and three junior doctors, including an accredited advanced trainee who supports daily continuity of care.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
