{"id":106264,"date":"2026-06-19T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=106264"},"modified":"2026-06-17T18:51:51","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T08:51:51","slug":"planting-hope-for-local-koalas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/planting-hope-for-local-koalas\/","title":{"rendered":"Planting hope for local koalas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KOALAS along the Barwon River are gaining vital refuge from a warming climate, with a local conservation group planting thousands of trees to restore the river corridors the species increasingly relies on for survival.<\/p>\n<p>The Koala Clancy Foundation has planted more than 185,000 trees along waterways including the Barwon, Moorabool and Little rivers since it was established in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Founder Janine Duffy, who has worked with koalas since 1992, said the organisation was created to address a shortage of high-quality habitat in the region.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2026\/06\/KoalaClancyNB-2_25338-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Koala Clancy aim to plant 300,000 trees by 2030 and are already more than halfway to that target. Photo: Nyah Barnes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One thing that I found was that [koalas] really required is high-quality habitat beside rivers in our region,&#8221; she said. &#8220;No one was doing it, so we started to do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With climate change intensifying heatwaves and drought, Duffy said river corridors would become increasingly important for the species.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seven days of heat can effectively kill koalas,&#8221; she said. &#8220;More heatwaves, more droughts \u2026 will pretty much wipe out koalas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2026\/06\/KoalaClancyNB-3_16377-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Koala Clancy team are dedicated to restoring koala habitats in the You Yang, Barwon River and surrounding regions. Photo: Nyah Barnes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rivers are going to become the only places koalas can get through summers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The foundation works with private landholders and volunteer planting teams to restore native vegetation along waterways.<\/p>\n<p>Among them are Stonehaven landowners Heike and Mark Dunn, who have hosted revegetation projects on their property for several years.<\/p>\n<p>There is a mutual appreciation between the Dunns and the volunteers who help with the planting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People really appreciate being able to come [to our property],&#8221; Heike said. &#8220;[The volunteers] come and thank us for letting them plant trees here, and we&#8217;re like, thank you for planting here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2026\/06\/KoalaClancyNB-4_39351-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heike (pictured) and Mark Dunn\u2019s Stonehaven property has been used in Koala Clancy planting days for many years, their farm-dog Poppy (pictured) enjoys meeting the volunteers.
