Their love is unconditional. They want only to be with you and to make you happy. Exactly like Pooh Bear \u2014 wherever you happen to be going, they, too \u2014 serendipitously \u2014 are going there, also. Let\u2019s go together!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dogs have been a constant in my life. Sadly, they get into your heart and then they break it. When they die it is exactly like losing a member of the family.<\/p>\n<p>I recall two occasions walking in the rain for the 6-kms from the Ballarat Group Practice to my home in Golden Point \u2014 weeping involuntarily at having to put one of my dogs to rest.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Berlin, Paris, and Rome, it is illegal in Victoria for a dog owner to take their canine into a caf\u00e9 \u2014 impeccable behaviour notwithstanding. One cannot imagine what harm a well trained dog \u2014 sitting under the table \u2014 is going to create. Dogs behave as badly as their owner allows. The decision should rest with the owner of the caf\u00e9 \u2014 not an authority which imagines it knows best in its persistent overreach.<\/p>\n<p>Eons ago \u2014 armed with a copy of \u201cTiffany\u2019s Table Manners for Teenagers\u201d \u2014 I spoke with a group of aspirant soldiers at the erstwhile Portsea Officer Cadet School. I guided them through the social faux pas of flat\/glass\/tableware, linen, serveware, and holloware.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we ought apply the same rigorous scrutiny to some of the caf\u00e9 patrons. I am more perturbed by the standard of table manners than I am about a dog sitting under the table \u2014 wagging its tail.<\/p>\n<p>Watch closely and you will spot patrons using their knives and forks like weapons of war. Holding them like pencils \u2014 if ever they stop waving them in the air long enough to put them down between each mouthful \u2014 they rest the flatware on the plate at a quarter-to-three; they cut bread rolls \u2014 ignoring the butter knife they use their own knife to apply butter from the dish \u2014 squeezing it into a sandwich!<\/p>\n<p>It is bad enough they soup with a round spoon \u2014 which they slurp or suck \u2014 they tilt the bowl toward and not away from themselves; they chew with mouths open \u2014 elbows and wrists on the table \u2014 it\u2019s like a grotesque Fellini film! They call their napkin a serviette. Believing it\u2019s what one does in the best houses \u2014 middleclass pretention \u2014 they wait for other people\u2019s food to arrive. You do that only if royalty is present. They grasp stemmed glasses by the bowl \u2014 and drink steaming coffee. Mama Mia!<\/p>\n<p>The contentious litany continues \u2014 no handbags, phones, or keys on the table. Finger bowls! Insulting the cook by seasoning before tasting. Historically \u2014 no chicken is served with pasta \u2014 pasta \u00e8 primo, pollo \u00e8 secondo; and Bolognese sauce \u2014\u00ad an English creation \u2014 is a misnomer. In Bologna \u00e8 rag\u00f9\u2014 not a sauce. Latte is milk \u2014 not coffee! It\u2019s caff\u00e8 latte \u2014 milk coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Epicurean solecisms are unsurprising in a country where spaghetti out of a can, on toast with a fried egg \u2014 is still eaten for breakfast! My Tuscan-born, Italian father arrived in 1926. He was gastronomically horrified. Slowly they wrought a culinary revolution \u00ad\u2014 they introduced virgin olive oil \u2014 substituted Kraft Cheddar for pecorino \u2014 and taught Australians how to cook.<\/p>\n<p>Risking ostracism \u2014 weighing the overwhelming proof \u2014 and on the balance of probability \u2014 I am disposed to sharing the caf\u00e9 with a dog rather than some people.<\/p>\n<p>Buon appetito!
