CHRISTMAS Day is a festive time when families and friends share a meal, give and receive presents, listen to the Queen\u2019s speech and relax with loved ones.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately for many in Ballarat this is not how they will spend the day.<\/p>\n
However, the annual 3BA Christmas Appeal will again do its best to help those in need in the Ballarat area have the best possible day.<\/p>\n
3BA\u2019s Ballarat Today hosts Garrath Cockerell and Gabe Hodson were joined in the studio by Ballarat legend Steve Moneghetti and the station\u2019s general manager John Fitzgibbon to officially launch the 39th annual appeal last week.<\/p>\n
Mr Moneghetti said sadly there a lot of families out there who will do it tough over Christmas.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe list of people and families needing support grows every year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy donating cash, non-perishable foods and toys to the appeal is a way that we can support these families in making it a joyous occasion.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Fitzgibbon said a meal and presents to celebrate Christmas is not an absolute given for some families in this community.<\/p>\n
\u201cThirty-per cent of families in this region have a house hold income of $41,000 or less,\u201d said Mr Fitzgibbon.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat makes things a bit tight at Christmas time so this will allow them to have an enjoyable Christmas that most of us take for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Fitzgibbon said the business community in town really knows this is an appeal that helps our own with everything staying right here in Ballarat.<\/p>\n
The Toy Run organised by Ulysses Motorcycle Club is coming up in December, Ballarat Carols will take up collections for the appeal while the Ballarat Woodworkers Guild will be making hundreds of toys again.<\/p>\n
One hundred per cent of donations received are sent directly to The Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, Uniting Ballarat and Anglicare for distribution into the community.<\/p>\n
Money received is used to purchase food to ensure families can eat over the Christmas period most importantly to help put a meal on the table for Christmas Day.<\/p>\n
