{"id":18794,"date":"2019-01-03T01:09:54","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T14:09:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=18794"},"modified":"2019-01-03T07:47:59","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T20:47:59","slug":"taking-the-fuel-out-of-bushfire-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/real-estate\/taking-the-fuel-out-of-bushfire-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking the fuel out of bushfire risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AUSTRALIA\u2019s forest managers\u00a0<\/strong><strong>will have a better understanding\u00a0<\/strong><strong>of mechanical fuel load reduction\u00a0<\/strong><strong>as a tool to reduce bushfire\u00a0<\/strong><strong>risk thanks to the $1.5 million\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Mechanical Fuel Load Reduction\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Trials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Senator Richard Colbeck, said bushfires are unfortunately an inevitable and devastating occurrence and the impact they can have on lives and our primary industries is often overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Australian Government has been working hard with state governments to undertake the Mechanical Fuel Load Reduction Trials through the National Bushfire Mitigation Program,\u201d Mr Colbeck said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trials are examining if mechanical reduction of fuel load is another viable way of protecting forests and communities, in areas where planned burning is undesirable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy undertaking these trials and incorporating the learnings from them we will be able to use evidence-based prevention and management methods in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hope is that it will give us alternatives to those we currently have\u2014like planned burning\u2014especially around key assets, high population areas where smoke can cause health concerns, or high conservation value areas where planned burns pose too high a risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese trials are about reducing the potential for high intensity bushfires by finding effective and efficient ways to reduce fuel loads whilst retaining important forest values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trials provide an example of innovative, active and adaptive management approaches to forest and fire protection across the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re always looking for ways that do the least harm to the forest and produce the most benefit in mitigating the risk of bushfires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe treatments have now concluded and the results are being used to model fire risk at a landscape level, and analyse the costs and benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe overall results of these trials are expected in mid-2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Government provided $15 million through the National Bushfire Mitigation Program from 2014 for states and territories to implement long-term bushfire mitigation strategies and improved fuel reduction activities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTRALIA\u2019s forest managers\u00a0will have a better understanding\u00a0of mechanical fuel load reduction\u00a0as a tool to reduce bushfire\u00a0risk thanks to the $1.5 million\u00a0Mechanical Fuel Load Reduction\u00a0Trials.
