VOLUNTEERS from all organisations often say they offer their time and commitment in order to give back to the community \u2013 they want to make a difference and help others.<\/p>\n
Not many of Ballarat\u2019s community organisations would survive without their valuable volunteer resource.<\/p>\n
Lifeline Ballarat are offering an opportunity to participate in a unique form of community service in a relaxed, safe and caring environment.<\/p>\n
Last year volunteers at Lifeline Ballarat answered more than 10,000 calls, providing confidential 24\/7 telephone crisis support and referral services to people in need.<\/p>\n
In order to be effective in the role of a crisis supporter volunteers Lifeline provides nationally recognised training on communication, listening, mental health issues and self-awareness.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe training provides personal and professional benefits for each volunteer and broadly within our community,\u201d said Michelle MacGillivray program manager at Lifeline Ballarat.<\/p>\n
Jake, who asked his surname not be used, describes his experience as a Lifeline Ballarat volunteer as inspirational.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have gained skills and knowledge in a supportive and flexible environment not only for the professional Lifeline setting, but also in a practical life sense,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a volunteering experience that gives back in so many ways, not only to the callers but to the volunteer.\u201d<\/p>\n
