A COHORT of Federation University\u2019s Victorian Certificate Applied Learning students are celebrating their completion of a six-week internship through P-Tech at IBM.<\/p>\n
The students were working in various information technology areas at the Mt Helen centre, including cloud computing, data analysis, website programming for the ATO, programming language, the Energy Australia internal help desk and Telstra spare parts logistics.<\/p>\n
The P-Tech program, Pathways in Technology, is FedUni\u2019s way of preparing VCAL students for the competitive workforce by partnering the science, technology, engineering and mathematics industries with educational opportunities.<\/p>\n
Gabriel Gervasoni has learned a lot as an intern.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s proud of what he\u2019s achieved at IBM in programming.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel I\u2019ve accomplished a lot. I feel like I\u2019m welcome here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have been able to do anything like this without P-Tech, Federation College and the support IBM\u2019s given.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maeve Mensch interned with Energy Australia\u2019s internal helpdesk, assisting employees with their computer issues. She was pleasantly surprised by her transition into the workspace.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought it would be a really tough area to work in\u2026but it\u2019s really supportive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
IBM P-Tech industry liaison coordinator, Trevor Adams, provides work experience opportunities.<\/p>\n
He said this round of internships was the first collaboration between P-Tech and IBM. All the students involved had already completed year 12.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019ve been with us since earlier in January.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s actually a scholarship that Federation University support,\u201d Mr Adams said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got a much bigger cohort of Year 12s coming through this year, so there will be more students coming into this process next year as well.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
