It was about my late mother, Beria, in which I was her voice and that of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>30 other characters. The piece was reflective of the racially rampant 1950s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IN recognition of NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee) Week, I am sharing several of the scenes from the piece. My mother was one of those remarkable people who didn\u2019t notice the colour of people\u2019s skin. She blatantly ignored the draconian laws regarding Aborigines and challenged the local policeman with, \u201cPut me in gaol!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cRain, hail, or shine I washed on Saturday morning. This particular Saturday morning I was out early, pegging-out the first load, when three or four gins come to the back gate. They always said hello, and stopped for a bit of chat. Nina was a regular. She used to wear three or four dresses at a time. She was always smiling and happy. She spotted me straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cG\u2019day Mrs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cG\u2019day Nina. How are you today, love?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty good Mrs; \u2018ow\u2019s ya self.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, you know. Fair to middling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYouse not fightin\u2019 with ya old man again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, not today Nina, but I\u2019m buggared if I know where all this washing comes from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI reckon all that washin\u2019 wears ya clothes out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think so, Nina?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I do Mrs. And another thing&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI reckon you should make ya rusband do the washin\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh yeah, and I might win charities, Nina!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They were chattering away amongst themselves. I couldn\u2019t make out what they were saying; next thing Nina calls out to me:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, Mrs. Me and me friends, well, we was wondrin\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh yes, what about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe was wondrin\u2019 if youse got any old dresses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I have, Nina\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat dress youse wearin\u2019s looks pretty bloody old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll give you old, Nina!\u201d I could hear them laughing at me as they went running-off down the back lane. I liked Nina. She was a good soul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a couple of years there was a real old Wongi that I used to feed. He was as black as the ace of spades. Three or four times a week he\u2019d come and stand at the back gate. He never called out; he just waited patiently till I spotted him. Sometimes if I missed him Ronnie would say: \u201cMum, your boyfriend\u2019s waiting.\u201d He was a tall, skinny bloke, and he always looked so sick. He never had shoes, not even in the winter. I always gave him hot soup, bread and meat, and tea and sugar in a brown paper bag. All he ever said was: \u201cThank you Mrs.\u201d I used to watch him as he\u2019d wander-off down the back lane. When I told the daughter-in-law, Jean, what I\u2019d done, oh, did she carry-on? \u201cFor God\u2019s sake, don\u2019t give \u2018em anything. You know what they\u2019re like. Next thing he\u2019ll be back with the whole bloody tribe. You\u2019ll never get rid of \u2018em.\u201d Suddenly one day he stopped coming. Poor old buggar, I s\u2019pose he must have died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI once spent three days making marmalade on an open fire in the middle of the bush. And then after all that Ginger and the two kids, Lewie and Nita, didn\u2019t like it. A couple of gins came wandering-by and I give to them. The next day they come back with bunch of pink and white everlastings for me. They didn\u2019t speak any English, they just smiled. I kept those everlastings for years.
