{"id":24283,"date":"2019-09-05T05:40:23","date_gmt":"2019-09-04T19:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=24283"},"modified":"2019-09-04T13:55:32","modified_gmt":"2019-09-04T03:55:32","slug":"roundabout-time-for-bannockburn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/roundabout-time-for-bannockburn\/","title":{"rendered":"Roundabout time for Bannockburn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Coker and Shire call on Federal government to deliver on Bannockburn intersection promise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEVERY time\u201d drivers enter Bannockburn\u2019s problem north-east intersection they are \u201cat risk,\u201d says Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside Golden Plains Shire Mayor, Cr Owen Sharkey, Ms Coker is urging the Federal government to upgrade the five-way intersection, where Clyde and Shelford-Bannockburn Roads meet Kelly Road, adjacent to the railway line.<\/p>\n<p>The pair have demanded the Federal Coalition honour the $3.2 million promise made during the last election and install a roundabout before a fatal accident occurs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project addresses the risks to residents and visitors who use this five-way intersection that merges right at the entrance to the business district of Bannockburn,\u201d Ms Coker said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s critical that the government makes this project a priority and immediately provides the funding it committed so the project can get underway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe road toll in Victoria, indeed across the country, has increased with most fatalities tragically occurring in regional areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bannockburn intersection is just one of a number of road upgrade projects that Scott Morrison has promised that should be funded now to save lives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Sharkey emphasised the need to prioritise the works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clearly a serious safety issue and the new roundabout is a top priority for local residents and Golden Plains Shire council,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Federal government made a firm commitment to fund the $3.2 million project and we are urging the government to now move forward to construction of the roundabout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBannockburn is one of Victoria\u2019s fast-growing towns, with a thriving retail and commercial centre, attracting more shoppers and visitors every year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current five-road intersection is a hazard for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, particularly at peak traffic times,\u201d Cr Sharkey said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Coker also said Black Spot funding is \u201cdesperately needed\u201d to address works on the Meredith-Steiglitz Road.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coker and Shire call on Federal government to deliver on Bannockburn intersection promise \u201cEVERY time\u201d drivers enter Bannockburn\u2019s problem north-east intersection they are \u201cat risk,\u201d says Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker.
