{"id":24642,"date":"2019-09-21T06:00:35","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T20:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=24642"},"modified":"2019-09-22T15:15:31","modified_gmt":"2019-09-22T05:15:31","slug":"smiths-style-on-sartorial-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/smiths-style-on-sartorial-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"Smith\u2019s style on sartorial stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FASHION designer, Jordyn Smith got her mum on the runway at Melbourne Fashion Week, but not in the way you\u2019d expect.<\/p>\n<p>The Ballarat creative, completing her Bachelor of Fashion Design Honours year at RMIT, recently developed a collection that is 80 per cent woollen, and sustainable called <em>Fashion\u2019s Prometheus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As one of 20 students selected to show work in this year\u2019s MFW, and a finalist in the Specsavers Student Designer Award, Smith was given the opportunity to share her collection on a nationally recognised catwalk.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24644\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24644\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24644\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/09\/Lucas-Dawson-for-web-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/09\/Lucas-Dawson-for-web-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/09\/Lucas-Dawson-for-web-768x1163.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/09\/Lucas-Dawson-for-web-676x1024.jpg 676w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/09\/Lucas-Dawson-for-web.jpg 1625w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24644\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Lucas Dawson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An image of her mother as a high school student in the 1980s is the hero of a jumper Smith created for the collection, with help from Ballarat\u2019s Interknit.<\/p>\n<p>A scholarship from the Australian Wool Education Trust pushed her to explore industrial knitting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandma used to work at Interknit and I\u2019m all about utilising community to create my projects,\u201d Smith said. \u00a0\u201cI spent a day with Interknit\u2019s Andrew and Jamie, working out patterns and imagery, and two days with them in the factory, which was really awesome because I\u2019ve never really been around knitting machines all that much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been really fun. I definitely want to work with them more, and I\u2019ve even had a second one produced, and sold it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Fashion\u2019s Prometheus <\/em>is inspired by 80s glam rock, and objects and imagery Smith found at op-shops and antique stores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith my own interest in sustainable fashion, I wanted to produce fashion goods that have stories embedded, that make people want to be connected to the garment and not just throw it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Presenting the finished textiles at Melbourne Town Hall\u2019s Student Runway, Smith was proud, but nervous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so wild. A couple of days later, it really sunk in,\u201d she said. \u201cI got to show my work to industry, fashion journalists from different magazines, and it\u2019s that first step towards a future career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also worked with a local jeweller and Greenhalgh Tannery.
