IN a bid to encourage and acknowledge positive actions of younger residents of the Golden Plains community, the Shire is calling for nominations for the Mayoral Youth Program\u2019s Community Impact Awards.<\/p>\n

The council is looking for people aged 12 to 18 years who as volunteers have had a positive impact, either individually or in a group, on the community.<\/p>\n

Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey said the awards program is a great opportunity to reward and inspire youth to be active community members through volunteering.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Community Impact Awards is all about recognising and celebrating the positive contributions young people make to our communities every day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many different ways our Shire\u2019s youth can give back to the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can be as simple as helping an elderly neighbour walk their dog, joining a community tree planting event, participating in a youth group or helping repaint the local scout hall.\u201d<\/p>\n

Community groups who support and assist young people with their volunteering will also be recognised as part of the awards process.<\/p>\n

According to data from the 2017 Mission Australia Youth Survey volunteer work ranks second behind sport in the top activities undertaken by Golden Plains\u2019 young people.<\/p>\n

Luke Getsom, the municipality\u2019s 2019 young citizen of the year, said sometimes a simple act of kindness can changes someone\u2019s day completely.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust by opening the door or giving someone a smile can have a massive impact on their life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoing major things like fundraising or supporting a team can have a big impact on a wide array of people.\u201d<\/p>\n
