Convenor and head judge, Stephen Creelman said there were nine competitors from six or seven employers around the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe competition was extremely tight, so only one or one and a half points separated first to fourth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a series of welds that the guys have to do, set to a code standard. These guys are welding at the next level beyond advanced, so it\u2019s way above the day to day skill level required at their apprenticeship, so a lot of practice goes into it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was really impressed with their high skill level and overall scores, and the boys that won it deserved it, it was a big day. Win, lose or draw, the experience they get out of it is really valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Usually, the first-place getter would now begin preparing for nationals, which will be held in Perth next year, but due to his age, Mr Lucas will be too old.<\/p>\n
Mr Creelman and Mr Baudendistal have the opportunity to apply for this spot in the championships, so could begin a demanding period of training ahead of the next stage of the competition.<\/p>\n
